SANGSAD BHABAN, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - Local Government, Rural Development and
Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said in the Jatiya
Sangsad (JS) that the combined daily water demand in Dhaka North City
Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) currently stands
at 320 crore-325 crore litres.
Responding to a starred tabled question from ruling party lawmaker Nilufar
Chowdhury Moni (women seat-10) in the House, he said seasonal variations
affect overall water consumption across the capital.
"At present, the total daily water demand in Dhaka North and South City
Corporations is 320-325 crore litres, although demand varies between the
summer and winter seasons," he told Parliament.
With speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, in the chair, the minister said
that Dhaka WASA's current daily water production capacity is 295 crore to 300
crore litres.
Highlighting measures taken to ensure safe drinking water, he said the
utility authority uses modern treatment technologies before supplying water
through its distribution network.
"Water is treated using advanced chemicals including PAC (Poly Aluminium
Chloride), alum sulphate and chlorination. The quality of water is tested at
WASA's own laboratories in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO)
guidelines, and only after ensuring the required standards is the water
supplied through the network," he said.
The minister further informed parliament that Dhaka WASA conducts regular
monitoring of water quality across the city.
"Dhaka WASA collects 40-50 water samples daily from different locations
across the metropolitan area and examines various parameters to ensure water
quality," he added.
The minister said the government remains committed to ensuring the supply of
safe and clean drinking water to residents of the capital through continuous
monitoring and quality control measures.
