
JHENAIDAH, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) - People across the district are in deep shock at the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
Quran recitations and prayer gatherings (mahfil) have begun in various locations throughout the district, including upazilas, unions, municipalities, and the district town.
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away passed away this morning (December 30) while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
Her death has left a profound sadness across the nation, and a wave of grief has descended upon the people of Jhenaidah.
As the news of her demise spread, people from all walks of life in Jhenaidah paid tribute to the leader who was known for her unwavering stance on democracy and the rights of the people.
At the district BNP office, Quran recitations began this morning, and similar activities are taking place in every upazila and BNP office in the district.
Party members have been wearing black badges since the morning, and black flags are flying alongside the national flag at party offices. The grief is visible in both the town and the rural areas, as people reflect on the life and legacy of the former prime minister.
Local businessman Aslam Mia spoke with deep respect, saying, "Begum Khaleda Zia has struggled all her life. She never bowed her head when it came to the country's issues and the rights of the people. She was the leader of all the people, and will remain so for generations."
Rickshaw puller Nazrul Islam also shared his thoughts, saying, "Many may oppose her for political reasons, but no one can deny her contribution to the sovereignty of the country, the welfare of the people, and the preservation of democracy. She was not just a party leader; she was the leader of the people."
Residents Selina Khatun and Rikta Khatun expressed their shock upon hearing the news, adding, "Begum Khaleda Zia stood by the people in times of crisis. Today, the country cries as she has left us. A leader like her, uncompromising and devoted, may never come again."
District BNP president Md. Abdul Majid spoke to BSS, emphasizing the irreplaceable loss. "Begum Khaleda Zia was an uncompromising leader. She dedicated her life to restoring democracy and fighting for the interests of the people. Her leadership was sorely needed in this critical time. Her absence creates a void that can never be filled," he said.
He further added, "She endured years of torture, imprisonment, and oppression by the fascist government. The government’s actions slowly pushed her towards death. Today, the people of Jhenaidah, along with BNP leaders and activists, have lost an invaluable leader. We pray for her soul to rest in peace."
The mourning continues throughout the district, with people united in grief over the loss of a leader who shaped the nation's political history and fought tirelessly for the rights of the people.
