CUMILLA, Aug 20, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death and
another to life-term imprisonment in a murder case in Titas upazila of the
district in 2023.
Sabbir Mahmud Chowdhury, judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge
Court-4, handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts this afternoon,
said Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) of the court Ikram Hossain.
The death-row convict is Billal Pathan, 55, while Shefali Begum, 45, get
life-term imprisonment.
The court also fined them Taka one lakh each.
The prosecution story, in brief, is that seven-year-old Saymon went to
Batakandi market with his mother in the afternoon of August 16, 2023 and went
missing on the way home after buying drinks from there.
A general diary (GD) was filed with Titas Police Station on August 18 in this
regard. The next day, in the morning, the burnt body of Saymon was recovered
from a sand field.
Khorsheda Akhter, mother of the deceased Saymon, filed a murder case against
her aunt Shefali Begum and 5-6 other unidentified people as the plaintiff.
During the investigation of the case, the name of Billal Pathan came up.
Later, the District Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested Shefali Begum
and Billal Pathan and sent them to jail.
After a long hearing and recording the statements of 15 witnesses, the court
announced the verdict today.
