ICT sets April 6 for submitting probe report in Jatrabari genocide case

DHAKA, Jan 30, 2025 (BSS) - The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today set April 6 for submitting probe report in a crimes against humanity and genocide case filed over crimes committed in the Jatrabari area during the student-led July-August mass uprising.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder passed the order allowing a time plea filed by the prosecution.

"Today was fixed for submitting probe report in the case ICT BD 5/2024. But we pleaded for two months time for submitting report. Allowing our plea, the tribunal set April 4 for the report," prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud said.

The prosecutor also said two accused former officer in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station Abul Hossain and former assistant commissioner of police's Jatrabari zone Tanjil Ahmed, out of total six were produced before the court for today's hearing.

Meanwhile, the ICT also allowed two separate pleas filed by prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim regarding seizure of different documents.

Prosecutor Gazi Mizanul Islam, Abdus Subhan Tarafdar and Saimum Reza were present during today's hearing.

Capital's major entry point Jatrabari turned into a major battlefield claiming hundreds of lives of protesters during the July-August mass uprising that ultimately toppled Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-years autocratic regime in the country. 

Members of law enforcing agencies and cadres of then ruling party Awami League carried out some of the most barbaric crimes in the area to subdue the students' movement there.
