DHAKA, Mar 2, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today said the Election Commission (EC) is not working to implement anyone else’s agenda.
“Our only agenda is to hold a free, fair, transparent and credible election. We are working to implement the agenda of 18 crore people of Bangladesh, nothing else,” he said.
The CEC said this at a discussion marking the 7th National Voter Day at Nirbachan Bhabahn auditorium at Agargaon in the city.
This year, National Voter Day is being observed with the theme ‘Tomar Amar Bangladeshe, Vote Dibo Milemishe’.
Nasir Uddin said, “Vote is a right of the people and we had to achieve the right at the cost of immense struggle. Now we are trying to establish the right and arrange a beautiful and acceptable election.”
Laying importance on political consensus regarding electoral code of conduct the CEC said, “This time voters should take it as their duty to exercise their franchise and hold a free and fair election.”
“Political leaders are giving different opinions and it’s the beauty of democracy. However, consensus among political parties is very crucial,” he said.
“Someone may win in the election by manipulating the polls. But, finally they cannot survive… history says this,” the CEC said hoping that none make any such attempt in future.
Election Commissioners Tahmida Ahmad and Brig Gen (Retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah also spoke on the occasion.
According to the updated list on March 2, 2025, the country now has a total of 12,18,32,274 eligible voters. Out of them 6,33,61,615 are males and 6,03,69,665 are females. There are 994 voters of the third gender.
At the event, the CEC handed over smart NID cards to 13 youths injured during July Uprising and now undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Earlier, a procession marking the Voters' Day paraded different streets.
