DHAKA, Nov 24, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today that real change cannot happen unless reform is first embraced within the heart.
"We are passing through a transition period, from a fascist system to a democratic system," he said. "In my view, no transformation is achievable if we do not embrace reform internally."
He made the remarks at an exchange of views with political parties on the review of the recommendations put forward by the Media Reform Commission, organised by the Broadcast Journalist Center (BJC) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center.
Fakhrul said today's dialogue centred on media freedom and the protection of journalists, noting that journalism, the education system and an independent media environment all depend on the fundamental structure of the state.
Recalling BNP's role in expanding media freedom, he said a one-party system was imposed in 1975 under BAKSAL, shutting down all newspapers.
"From that situation, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman introduced a free media system. Whenever the BNP came to power, it took steps to modernise and strengthen the media," he added.
He said the party has clearly outlined the establishment of an independent media in its 31-point proposal.
Fakhrul said political parties do not intend to control media outlets, adding that problems arise when individuals 'enter the pocket' of others.
"We have seen what happened over the last 15 years, many among you willingly contributed to establishing fascism," he remarked.
The BNP leader assured that demands raised by the BJC would be addressed on a priority basis if his party assumes office through the people's mandate.
