DHAKA, May 11, 2026 (BSS) - Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam today said no cattle markets would be allowed on or beside highways ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and passengers.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the conference room of the Road Transport Ministry at the secretariat here today.
The minister said 69 mobile courts would be operated at different spots in Dhaka to ensure uninterrupted travel for people heading to various districts during the Eid holidays and to prevent unnecessary traffic congestions on roads.
He said the Prime Minister had issued directives to ensure the safety of homebound Eid passengers. “We have held meetings with the relevant agencies in this regard. A meeting was also held under the leadership of the Prime Minister,” he added.
The minister said the Prime Minister had provided several directives, following which meetings were held by the Railway Ministry and the Ministry of Shipping. “Today, the meeting of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry was held,” he said.
Referring to Eid-ul-Azha, the minister said a large number of cattle-carrying trucks would also need smooth movement on roads during the period. To this end, round-the-clock monitoring arrangements have been made at the capital’s Dholaipar Bus Stand, Abdullahpur and Gabtoli Bus Terminals.
The minister said passengers had been requested not to board or get off buses at random places. Transport owners have also been instructed not to allow passengers to board or disembark indiscriminately, he added.
Executive magistrates and intelligence agency personnel, alongside highway police, would remain present on highways, he said, adding that immediate action would be taken in case of any major traffic congestion.
Rabiul said no one would be allowed to board launches from speedboats or small boats during this year’s Eid journey. However, passengers would be able to board at terminals where stair arrangements have already been made, he added.
The minister said specific instructions had been issued regarding ferry crossings during Eid travel. Passengers must get off buses before the vehicles board ferries, he said.
He added that measures had also been taken to control bus speed before boarding ferries and to install barricades at pontoons.
The minister said all necessary measures had been taken to ensure the safety of passengers travelling by road.
He also said garment factory owners had been requested to grant holidays to workers in phases over three days to ease Eid travel pressure.
