DHAKA, July 8, 2026 (BSS) - Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has proposed the establishment of a UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network to promote systematic knowledge-sharing, innovation and capacity-building among member states alongside calling for stronger international cooperation to address evolving global security challenges.
"As global security threats continue to evolve, the rapid advancement of technology and the transnational nature of criminal networks demand a fundamental transformation in traditional policing," he said.
Speaking at the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, the home minister said today's increasingly complex security landscape requires innovative, technology-driven policing and enhanced global collaboration.
To strengthen institutional learning among UN member states, Ahmed proposed the creation of the UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network, which would serve as a platform for sharing best practices, technological expertise, and innovative policing solutions.
He also urged greater international cooperation to confront climate change-related security risks, proposing the introduction of an Annual Environment Policing Conference to enhance global preparedness and coordinated responses to emerging environmental security challenges.
Highlighting Bangladesh's role as one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, the minister said the country has modernized its Formed Police Units and significantly enhanced specialized policing capabilities, including SWAT, bomb disposal, cybercrime investigation, forensic services, immigration policing, and intelligence-led policing.
Calling for a future-ready UN police force, Ahmed said the international community must work together to build a policing system that is adaptive, innovative, and committed to peace, security, and humanity.
The two-day UNCOPS 2026 summit brought together police chiefs and senior policymakers from UN member states to discuss the future of UN policing, technological innovation, and international cooperation in addressing transnational security challenges.
