SYLHET, Jan 31, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at an international conference here today emphasised on more dialogue for the political and social stability of the country.

Bangladesh is going through many political changes after the July revolution while global political, social and global contexts are changing rapidly. Now we need to look closely at international politics and relations, they said.

Department of Political Studies of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) organized the two-day conference on politics, society and development.

Special Assistant to the Education Adviser Dr M Aminul Islam was present as the chief guest in the inaugural function of the conference while SUST vice-chancellor Prof AM Sarwaruddin Chowdhury was in the chair.

Professor Rounaq Jahan of Columbia University, the USA, placed the keynote paper and discussed on Bangladesh’s challenges in getting rid of the legacy of its past undemocratic practices.

“Many acts have been formulated in our country since the independence, but those were rarely enforced. Many undemocratic things have happened and are still happening, as healthy political practices are missing here. We need issue-based political analysis,” Professor Rounaq Jahan said.

Vice Chancellor Prof AM Sarwaruddin Chowdhury too emphasized on political dialogue to bring positive changes in the society.

Pro vice chancellor Prof Dr Sazedul Karim, treasurer Dr Md Ismail Hossain, North South University Prof Dr Mahbubur Rahman, Dr Yang Hui of Yunnan University, China, visiting fellow of United Kingdom’s Open University Dr Nabila Idris, and Prof Romane Kaoki of Scuola Normale Superiore, Itali addressed the conference, among others.
