Supreme Judicial Appointment Council holds maiden meeting

DHAKA, Feb 18, 2025 (BSS) – The Supreme Judicial Appointment Council, formed to appoint Judges of the Supreme Court, held its maiden meeting here today.
 
Chaired by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, the meeting nominated former Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Tarik-Ul-Hakim and Professor Dr Sumaiya Khair of the Department of Law of the University of Dhaka as the two members of the council.
 
 With these two new members, the Supreme Judicial Appointment Council would hold its plenary meeting on February 25, a Supreme Court release signed by Appellate Division notification said here.
 
The Gazette of the Supreme Judicial Appointment Ordinance, 2025, was issued on January 21, forming the council.

According to the ordinance, the Chief Justice will act as the chairperson of the council. It will have a total of seven members, five of those will be ex-officio members and the other two will be nominated.
