DHAKA, March 4, 2025 (BSS) - Brazilian Chief Justice Antonio Herman Benjamin has said the world has taken a special lesson from the Bangladeshi youths who have brought about a remarkable change in the country.
 
“The young generation of the country through the recent student-people uprising has already proved that they can change the world,” the visiting Brazilian chief justice told a function here today.
 
He was delivering his special lecture at a programme titled ‘Global Trends in Environmental Law and Climate Law’ organized by the Dhaka University’s Faculty of Law at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban today.
 
Referring to the current challenges of environmental law, international policies and the role of the court in establishing environmental justice, the CJ of Brazil said, “Humanity around the world is facing various crises and challenges to deal with the natural resources, biodiversity, environmental conservation and climate change.”
 
He put emphasis on maintaining humanitarian activities as well as moral values and ensuring the rule of law to address these challenges through joint efforts.
 
The Chief Justice of Brazil further said climate change issues should be discussed under environmental law.
 
Highlighting various issues of natural disasters in Bangladesh, he said it is mandatory to increase investment in environmental conservation and provide correct guidance to the people to protect future generations and the planet earth.
 
“Joint efforts of judges, law-making bodies, governments, academics, researchers, environmental activists and the young generation are necessary in this regard,” he suggested.
 
Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan was present as the chief guest while DU Law Faculty Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Ekramul Haque presided over the discussion. Brazilian Ambassador to Bangladesh Paulo Fernando Dias Feres was present as the special guest.
 
Among others, teachers and students from different universities, including Dhaka University, lawyers, researchers, environmental activists and representatives of various organizations also took part in the event.
