Police role in UN peacekeeping missions brightens Bangladesh's image

DHAKA, May 28, 2025 (BSS) - The glorious and unique role of Bangladesh Police in the UN peacekeeping operations has enhanced the country's image across the globe, according to a statement of the Police Headquarters. 

     The statement was issued today marking the International UN Peacekeepers Day-2025 to be celebrated tomorrow across the country with due dignity.

     "The journey of Bangladesh Police in UN peacekeeping missions began in 1989 with the Namibia Mission. From the beginning to today, 21,815 peacekeepers of Bangladesh Police have served with professionalism and reputation in 26 missions in 24 countries. Twenty four peacekeepers of Bangladesh Police have dedicated their lives to world peacekeeping," the statement said today. 

     Currently, 199 peacekeepers, including 128 men and 71 women, of Bangladesh Police are deployed in UN peacekeeping missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Central Africa. 

     Women members of the Bangladesh Police have been participating in UN peacekeeping operations since 2000. Already, 1,927 women police peacekeepers have successfully completed their duties in various peacekeeping missions. 

     As a result of performing duties in the international arena, Bangladesh Police members have had the opportunity to learn about policing in different countries and have exchanged experiences with police from many countries. 

     Bangladesh Police are inspired to move away from colonial ideas and policing and encouraged towards people-oriented policing in a democratic manner.

     "Serving in UN peacekeeping missions has taught police members to get closer to the people and be more responsible towards them," the statement said. 

     Behind the expectations of today's people-oriented policing of Bangladesh Police posses the unique opportunity, knowledge and experience gained from performing duties in UN peacekeeping operations. 

     In addition to fulfilling its responsibilities of providing police services within the country, Bangladesh Police is committed to establishing world peace by engaging in UN peacekeeping operations through the implementation of UN mandates.
