DHAKA, Nov 9, 2025 (BSS) - The government is set to spend a hefty amount to ensure steady supplies of fertilizer in the country as the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase today gave approval to five major import proposals involving around 1.70 lakh metric tons of urea and TSP fertilizer from both international and domestic suppliers.

The decisions were taken at the 44th meeting of the government purchase committee held at Bangladesh Secretariat today with Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair to maintain agricultural productivity, stabilize domestic supply chains and avert any potential fertilizer shortage during crucial cultivation periods.

The proposals were placed by the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Agriculture and forwarded on behalf of the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), the two primary agencies responsible for importing and distributing fertilizer across the country.

Under the approved recommendations, Bangladesh will import a total of 110,000 metric tons of granular urea fertilizer in three separate lots.

The first consignment involves the purchase of 40,000 metric tons of bulk granular urea from Fertiglobe Distribution Limited, UAE.

The total cost for this consignment stands at Taka 195.43 crore with the per-metric-ton price fixed at US$ 399.17.

Fertiglobe has been one of Bangladesh's recurring suppliers in recent years, and officials noted that the pricing aligns with prevailing international market trends.

A second consignment of 40,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular urea fertilizer will be imported from SABIC Agri-nutrients Company of Saudi Arabia, one of the world's leading urea exporters.

This lot will cost the government around Taka 190.94 crore with a per-ton rate of US$390. SABIC is considered a reliable long-term procurement partner due to its stable supply capacity.

In addition to these international procurement arrangements, the government will also purchase 30,000 metric tons of bagged granular urea fertilizer from the Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO), a Bangladesh-based entity.

The contract price for this lot stands at around Taka 139.69 crore with the per-ton price calculated at US$ 379.50. This locally available supply is expected to support quicker distribution to agricultural regions.

Alongside urea, the committee also recommended approval for the import of 60,000 metric tons of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) fertilizer under a government-to-government arrangement with OCP NUTRICROPS of Morocco, the world's largest phosphate-based fertilizer producer.

Two separate lots of 30,000 metric tons each will be brought in by BADC.

Each lot will cost around Taka 199.51 crore with the per-ton rate set at US$ 542.

Government officials noted that these procurements are crucial to maintaining Bangladesh's food security and supporting farmers during peak planting cycles.
