JOYPURHAT, June 10, 2025 (BSS) - Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin today said that no government in the past except the incumbent interim government had taken timely steps to protect the rawhides sector of the country.

“We’ve distributed posters and leaflets to create awareness on the development of the rawhides and leather sector. We’ve also imparted training to some 86,000 butchers (Kosai),” he said.

The Commerce Adviser said this while visiting a rawhide Arat at Arafatnagar in the district this afternoon.

He said that the government had earlier fixed the price of salted rawhides and those who would sell the salted rawhides following due method would get better price. Besides, the salted rawhides kept in different Madrasahs would be sold at better price.

Replying to a question, Bashir said that the government has been working tirelessly so that the rights of the Madrasahs and Orphanages are protected in the rawhides selling.

He informed that the government had distributed some 7.50 lakh maunds of salt before the Eid so that the sellers get fair price of rawhides.

Bashir said that the government has been working to break down the syndicate in the leather sector that had grown over the 15 years of the previous regime.

Replying to another question, he said that there is no possibility of smuggling of rawhides to the neighboring country since the BGB members are active in this regard.

Later, he visited a Madrasah at Jamalpur area.

Joypurhat Deputy Commissioner Afroza Akhter Chowdhury, Police Super Md Abdul Wahab and Sadar UNO Rashedul Islam were present among others.
