Discussion on biotechnology pioneer Prof Ahmad Shamsul held at DU

DHAKA, AUG 24, 2025 (BSS)- A discussion titled 'Contribution of Prof. Dr Ahmad Shamsul Islam in the Development of Biotechnology in Bangladesh' was held at the Dhaka University here today.

Organized by Bangladesh Association for Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology at the auditorium of University's Botany department, DU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Mamun Ahmed attended the seminar as chief guest.

Botany department Prof. Rakhhari Sarkar presided over the function.

South-East University VC Dr. Yusuf Mahbub Islam, daughter of Dr. Ahmad Shamsul Islam also Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department's retired Prof. Zeba Islam Seraj and Botany Department Chairman Dr. Mihir Lal Saha spoke at the seminar, among others.
 
Mentionable, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Shamsul Islam is considered as the initiator of 'Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnological Research in Bangladesh'.
Prof. Shamsul Islam is the recipient of five prestigious awards within the country: President's Gold Medal in Agriculture (1984), Ekushey Padak (Martyr's Day Medal) in Education (1986), Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal in Biology (1987), Gold medal as Eminent Botanist by Bangladesh Association of Botany (1997) And Life Time Achievement Award by GNOBB in 2017.
  
He served as a Professor at the Botany Department of Dhaka University until his death.

He was born on August 6, 1924 and breathed his last April 14 this year.
