KHULNA, August 24, 2025 (BSS) – Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Khulna University (KU) Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim has said journalism is a highly challenging and risky profession.

“Those engaged in this field must embody integrity, courage, and commitment to truth. Journalism sheds light on injustices, irregularities, and positive aspects of society,” he said while making the remarks at a day-long training workshop on “Data Journalism” today at the university’s central library computer lab as chief guest.

The Discipline of Mass Communication and Journalism at Khulna University, in collaboration with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), organised the workshop.

The VC said, “Journalists must acquire modern technological and data-driven skills and academic knowledge to meet the demands of time.”

He further emphasised that journalists often need to investigate underlying facts, conduct research-based analysis, and present accurate information.

“For this, knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and computer science is essential. With the advancement of technology, AI and other digital tools are making journalistic work easier, but knowing how to use them properly is vital for improving the quality of journalism,” he added.

Joining the event virtually as special guest, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman highlighted the growing importance of data journalism.

He said, “Data journalism is one of the most powerful fields of modern media. Providing citizens with accurate news based on reliable information can strengthen democracy and accountability. Information-based reporting at every stage of journalism will enhance public trust in the media.”

Professor Sheikh Sharafat Hossain, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, and Mohammad Touhidul Islam, Director of TIB, addressed the workshop as special guests, while Dr Saramonami Hossain, head of the Mass Communication and Journalism Discipline, chaired the event.

Assistant Professor Md Shariful Islam delivered the welcome speech, while TIB Deputy Coordinator Zafar Sadiq conducted the session.

A total of 40 students from the discipline participated in the day-long training.
