KHULNA, Jan 13, 2026 (BSS) - A student of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, university and hospital sources said.

The student was identified as Md Rejwanul Haque, 24, a student of the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department, 21st batch.

He hailed from Pachish Mile Bazar area of Birganj upazila in Dinajpur.

According to sources, Rejwanul fell ill suddenly on Monday night while having tea at the DS canteen adjacent to Shaheed Smriti Hall on the KUET campus.

He was first taken to Ad-Din Medical College Hospital and later referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH), where he was declared dead at around 2:00 am.

Shaheed Smriti Hall Provost Dr ABM Mamun Zaman said he learned around 11.30pm that a student had suddenly suffered while drinking tea at the hall's DS.

"Upon hearing that he was taken to Ad-Din Medical College Hospital, the Director of Student Welfare and I immediately went there. From Ad-Din Hospital he was referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he later died during treatment," he added.

The sudden death of the student cast a pall of gloom over the university campus. In response, the KUET authorities decided to suspend all academic activities today.

Students, friends and various university-based organisations expressed deep shock and sorrow over Rejwanul Haque's untimely death, offering prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extending condolences to the bereaved family.

After a funeral prayer at the university's Central Jame Mosque, the body will be taken to Birganj in Dinajpur for burial at the family graveyard, a university source said.

Meanwhile, KUET also expressed deep condolences. In a condolence message signed by University Registrar Engineer Anisur Rahman Bhuiyan, it was stated that a student in the Materials Science and Engineering Department had died suddenly; in this regard, all academic activities at the university would remain suspended today.
