DHAKA, Jan 29, 2026 (BSS) – The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today pleaded for an apex court stay on the tribunal’s observations regarding what it termed lenient sentences awarded to convicts in a case of crimes against humanity committed in the capital’s Chankharpul area, where six people were killed on August 5, 2024.

Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam made the plea during the hearing of an appeal (ICT-BD Case No. 01/2025) at the Appellate Division Chamber Judge’s court.
At the end of today’s proceedings, Appellate Division Chamber Judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque stood over the hearing till February 1.

“The prosecution wants the apex court to stay the tribunal’s observations over the lenient sentences of the convicts and to direct that no bail or release be granted to them until disposal of the appeal,” Prosecutor Abdullah Al Noman told newsmen earlier in the day.

The ICT-1 on January 26 convicted and sentenced three people, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death in the case.

The other two condemned convicts are former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam.

The tribunal also ordered confiscation of the properties of the three condemned convicts. All three, along with another convict, are still at large.

It also sentenced former assistant commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul to six years’ imprisonment. Imrul is yet to be arrested and was tried in absentia.

The ICT-1 further sentenced former inspector Md Arshad Hossain to four years’ imprisonment, and former constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon and Nasirul Islam to three years’ imprisonment each.

Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam expressed dissatisfaction over the verdict on the day of its delivery and said the prosecution would file an appeal.
