Over 13.97 lakh people get state funded legal aid

DHAKA, Mar 6, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 13,97,530 people have received legal aid at government expense through the National Legal Aid Services Organization (Legal Aid), according to a report published on the organisation's official website.

The report, covering the period from 2009 to January 2026, provides a detailed overview of Legal Aid's activities across the country.

It said 30,316 people were assisted through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, while 11,39,242 received support via the 64 district Legal Aid Offices.

In addition, 29,979 people benefited from the Dhaka and Chattogram Workers' Legal Aid Cells and 1,97,993 individuals availed services through the toll-free national legal aid helpline.

The report noted that 1,36,576 prisoners also received legal aid under the programme.

The services are provided free of cost under the Legal Aid Services Act to assist financially disadvantaged and vulnerable justice seekers.

The National Legal Aid Services Organization operates under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs as a government-regulated service agency.
