DHAKA, April 9, 2026 (BSS) -Bangladesh currently has 1, 69,524 metric tons of fuel in reserve, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division has said.
The information was disclosed today by Monir Hossain Chowdhury, Joint Secretary of the division, at a press conference on the country's energy situation at the secretariat here.
He said the stock includes 1,43,143 metric tons of diesel, 9,569 metric tons of octane and 16,812 metric tons of petrol, adding that the reserves are sufficient to maintain normal supply.
"There will be no shortage of octane or petrol in the next two months," he noted.
Highlighting the global fuel price surge due to international market volatility, he said 80-85 countries have seen price increases.
"Although import costs have risen, Bangladesh has not been directly affected. The government is keeping the market stable through subsidies, currently providing around Tk 2,500 crore per month for the fuel sector."
On long queues at filling stations, he said they are not caused by actual shortages but by public panic and overstocking. "Temporary pressure may occur in some areas, but there is no real shortage," he said.
He added that the government has stepped up operations against illegal fuel stockpiling, seizing large quantities of diesel, octane and petrol daily and taking action through fines and imprisonment.
To ensure better fuel management, a 'Fuel Pass' app has been launched on a trial basis at two Dhaka filling stations.
The initiative is being gradually rolled out nationwide, with a significant number of users already registered.
