Outgoing Indian envoy meets JS Speaker, focuses on strengthening parliamentary relationship

DHAKA, April 13, 2026 (BSS) – Outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma today paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, where importance was given to further strengthen the parliamentary relationship between Bangladesh and India. 

Both sides discussed various bilateral issues, particularly mutual cooperation and partnerships, to foster the existing relations. 
 
The Speaker recalled the Indian government wholehearted support during the Liberation War in 1971, which gave the strong foundation to the bilateral relations of the two countries. 

“Bangladesh is the nearest neighboring country of India,” he said, adding that supporting Bangladesh’s candidacy as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by the Indian government is an evident of the country’s progressiveness and sincerity.

On the present parliament, Ahmad said, “The present parliament is very vibrant. The opposition party is playing an active role.”

The Speaker has stressed the need for strengthening the parliamentary relationship between the two countries by finding out the sectors of cooperation. 
  
While Verma said parliamentary friendship group can play a pivotal role for making a bridge between India and Bangladesh diplomatic relations. 

“The diplomatic relations will be strengthened further through exchange of visits of the parliamentary delegations,” he said.   

The meeting also focused on economic cooperation, connectivity, constructive discussion and enhancement of the people-to-people contact for giving a solid foundation to the relations between the two neighboring countries. 

At the outset of the meeting, the Speaker welcomed the outgoing Indian High Commissioner while the envoy congratulated Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on his assumption as the Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad. 

High Officials of the Indian High Commission, secretary of JS Secretariat and concerned high officials were present at the meeting.
