
TANGAIL, April 18, 2026 (BSS) - Liberation War Affairs Minister Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan today said that the BNP government has started working for the welfare of the people immediately after assuming office.
He stated that, in line with election pledges, the distribution of farmer cards and family cards has already begun and work on rural infrastructure development has also been initiated considering priorities.
He said these while talking to journalists after inaugurating a newly constructed bridge over the Jhinai River at Daponajor area under Basail upazila here this noon.
The minister said the government began its journey with virtually no resources. He mentioned that Dr. Yunus had brought the situation from a negative point to at least a neutral level and the present government started from there. Despite limited funds in the state treasury, development activities are being carried out.
He further said that under the able leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, development activities have already started across the country including Basail and Sakhipur upazilas. As part of this, the Daponajor Bridge has been inaugurated.
He also announced the foundation stones of a road and a school at Sakhipur upazila will be laid later in the day. Last week, the foundation stone of another bridge between Singardak and Patharghata under Basail upazila was laid.
He expressed his hope that a ‘wave of development’ would take place at Basail-Sakhipur upazilas and across the country during the tenure of this government to ensure benefits of all citizens.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mosammat Aklima Begum, LGED Executive Engineer of Tangail Mohammad Kamruzzaman, former Joint Secretary of District BNP Abul Kashem, Acting President of Basail Upazila BNP Mamun Al Jahangir, General Secretary Advocate Nur Nabi Abu Hayat Khan Nabu and Basail Municipality BNP President Aktaruzzaman Tuhin, were present at the meeting, among others.
The 282-meter-long girder bridge over the Jhinai River was constructed at a cost of Taka 29,96,26,748. The bridge is expected to benefit over one lakh people in the northern part of Basail upazila facilitating direct road connectivity with Tangail Sadar.
