
RAJSHAHI, April 18, 2026 (BSS) - A daylong large-scale free veterinary medical campaign and vaccination program was successfully held at Rajshahi University (RU) today providing essential healthcare services to livestock and companion animals in the Rajshahi region.
The event was organized under the sponsorship of the UQ Global Connection Event, University of Queensland, Australia, with technical support from the Rajshahi University Animal Welfare Association (RUAWA).
Inauguration ceremony took place on the premises of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (VAS) bringing together top veterinary academics, government animal health officials, and local law enforcement leadership.
Throughout the day, a dedicated team of veterinary students, faculty members, and practicing veterinarians administered free vaccins against critical diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR).
They also provided deworming, general health check-ups and medicines to cattle, goats, and community dogs brought by local farmers and pet owners from surrounding rural areas.
RU Pro-vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Main Uddin was present at the opening ceremony as chief guest.
In his address, he praised the initiative as a vital bridge between academic expertise and community service. "This program exemplifies the RU's commitment to extending beyond the classroom to directly improve the livelihoods of farmers and the health of animals across our region," he stated.
He also emphasized the importance of preventative vaccination, the One Health approach, and collaborative efforts between the university, government livestock services, and law enforcement to ensure the program's safety and reach.
VAS Department Chairman Professor Mahbubur Rahman, Godagari Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Shyla Sharmin, Founder VAS Faculty Dean Professor Jalal Uddin Sarder and Deputy Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Hemayetul Islam were also present on the occasion.
