CHATTOGRAM, April 19, 2026 (BSS): Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam today expressed his goal to boost cargo transportation by rail from Chattogram Port.

Currently, only 4 percent of cargo is transported by rail, but the plan is to increase this to 16 to 18 percent. Despite the lack of necessary locomotives, the capacity has already been somewhat increased.

Sheikh Rabiul Alam made these remarks during a meeting with representatives of government and private entities associated with the port at the conference room of Chattogram Port this afternoon.

He urged all parties involved to consider the broader interests and potential of Chattogram Port, rather than just their own positions. He emphasized the importance of looking at the state's interests and working together to solve various issues such as tariffs, labor wages, and customs activities.

After the meeting, the minister stated that detailed discussions on these issues would take place with relevant organizations in Dhaka, and necessary decisions would be made. He highlighted the significant opportunities for international trade at Chattogram Port and stressed the need for increased coordination and flexibility to capitalize on these opportunities.

Addressing the challenges faced during operations, the minister acknowledged issues like container jams and importers' difficulties. He emphasized the importance of minimizing these problems to ensure the port's profitability and benefit of  the state on a larger scale.

The minister also mentioned the attitude of businessmen, noting that despite challenges, business continues to thrive and grow. He encouraged a long-term perspective on profits and opportunities for future generations.

The meeting was attended by state minister for Shipping Md. Rajib Ahsan, Shahadat Hossain Selim , MP, Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Zakaria, Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman, and leaders from various port-related business organizations.
