SYLHET, May 15, 2026 (BSS) - Commerce, Industries, and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir today said that scientific research should focus on developing indigenous solutions to address the country's practical needs.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the divisional-level 47th National Science and Technology Week and Science Fair as the chief guest at the Mohammad Ali Gymnasium at Sylhet District Stadium.

The minister said there is no such thing as failure in scientific research, as every step in the pursuit of knowledge creates new experience and lays the foundation for future innovation.

"Teachers, parents and all concerned must encourage students to engage more in scientific activities to help build a technologically advanced nation," he said.

Muktadir said knowledge-based societies are key drivers of national progress and countries achieve development through innovation and the cultivation of knowledge.

Referring to the United States, he noted that university-based research and innovation have helped the country attain global leadership.

He also appreciated participating students for their creativity, courage and innovative thinking reflected in the projects displayed at the fair.

The minister cited oral saline for preventing diarrhoea and locally developed methods for preserving onions and potatoes as successful examples of need-based research.

He stressed the importance of continuing science fairs and scientific practices at schools, colleges and universities to inspire new ideas and innovation among young people.

Divisional Commissioner Md Mashiur Rahman presided over the inaugural ceremony.
