Police arrest youth with $159,300 at Lalmonirhat

LALMONIRHAT, May 15, 2026 (BSS) - Police arrested a young man and seized a significant amount of foreign currency during a raid at the Teesta Toll Plaza area under Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila on Thursday evening.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from Sadar Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Shahab Uddin, set up a checkpoint in the area and stopped an autorickshaw for inspection. 

During questioning, officers searched a passenger identified as Likhan Miah, 23, who was travelling in the vehicle.

They recovered a total of US$159,300 from his possession, which had been concealed using a special method. 

The seized amount included 1,581 notes of 100 US dollars and 24 notes of 50 US dollars. 

The estimated value of the recovered currency is around two crore Bangladeshi Taka.

The arrested person is the son of Md. Nurunnabi Sarkar of the Ghoshpara area under Kurigram Sadar Upazila.

Officer-in-Charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, Swapan Islam, confirmed the seizure and said the foreign currency is now in police custody. 

He added that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the source of the money and its intended destination.

Police said legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident.
