RAJSHAHI, May 15, 2026 (BSS) - The formal harvesting of guti variety mangoes has officially begun in Rajshahi. Marketing will start once the mangoes are harvested.
With the arrival of the Bengali month of Joishtho, mango collection activities have started in the orchards. From morning to evening, farmers and traders will be busy collecting, sorting, and marketing mangoes.
Various varieties of raw mangoes are already being sold in local markets. Now ripe mangoes will also be available. However, only guti variety mangoes are available at the moment. Different varieties of mangoes will hit the market in a few days.
According to the ‘Mango Calendar’ announced by the district administration, farmers and traders began harvesting guti mangoes this morning. With this, the mango season is starting to pick up in Rajshahi, one of the largest mango-producing regions in the northern region.
Farmers were seen harvesting mangoes on a limited scale in the Kukhondi and Budhpara areas of Paba upazila in the city.
However, stakeholders claim that guti mangoes in most orchards have not yet fully ripened. Full-scale mango collection will begin in a few more days.
Some mangoes were also bought and sold at Baneshwar Haat, Rajshahi’s largest mango market. On the first day, mangoes were sold at Taka 800 to 1,200 per maund, depending on variety and size.
Mango trader Shafiqul Islam said guti mangoes are being collected in accordance with the time set by the district administration.
There are plans to take some mangoes for sale at Baneshwar Haat on Saturday. But since it’s the first day of the season, not many mangoes are being picked. The mangoes haven’t ripened properly yet either. These mangoes will take a few more days to ripen.
Mango farmer Ariful Islam said, “I’ve started harvesting mangoes from a few trees. I’ll take these to the market and sell them myself. But guti mangoes aren’t that tasty. There’s more demand for Gopalbhog and Himsagar. It will take more time to harvest those mangoes. The mangoes being picked now will be taken to the market for sale.”
Another farmer, Rezaul Karim, said, “Right now only guti variety mangoes are being harvested. Mangoes won’t be picked in large volumes yet. More mangoes will be harvested after a few days. Mango harvesting for this season started just today. Once they’re taken to the markets, we’ll know the buying and selling prices.”
To prevent the marketing of unripe mangoes and ensure quality, the district administration has announced a calendar.
According to the announcement, Gopalbhog can be harvested from May 22, Ranipachhanda and Lokkhonbhog from May 25, and Himsagar and Khirsapat from May 30.
In addition, Langra and Banana Mango can be marketed from June 10, Amrapali and Fazli from June 15. Later, Bari Mango-4 can be collected from July 5, Ashwina from July 10, and Gourmoti from July 15.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, mango cultivation has taken place on 19,063 hectares of land in Rajshahi district this season.
The production target for this year is set at around 243,993 metric tons of mangoes, with an estimated market value of over Taka 780 crore.
