Coastal areas threatened by Meghna erosion, Anee assure urgent measures

NOAKHALI, May 17, 2026 (BSS)-Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne today said that people in the coastal areas of greater Noakhali have long been fighting against natural disasters to survive. 

“Residents living along the riverbanks have continuously facing  river erosion, flooding and inundation for long in the region,” he made these remarks here this afternoon while visiting erosion-hit areas along the Meghna River at Subarnachar area.

He said that the country now has an elected government and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is paying close attention to alleviating the public sufferings. According to him, the government is giving importance to every public demand and taking necessary actions accordingly.

The Minister said that the government has completed three months in office only and is already working across the country to protect the public interests.

Referring to the ongoing erosion, he said, “We directly witnessed the severe erosion of the Meghna River. Markets, schools, colleges and agricultural lands are being devoured”. 

“We even saw a school collapsing before our eyes. Emergency measures have already been undertaken to prevent further erosion in line with the expectations of local residents. I believe that the people will benefit if everyone works together,” he added.

Among others, Mohammad Shahjahan, Muhammad Shafiqul Islam and Mahbub Alamgir Alo, along with local leaders, were present during the visit.
