DHAKA, May 25, 2026 (BSS) - As the government holidays for the holy Eid-ul-Azha began today, a huge number of homebound passengers was seen at the Sadarghat launch terminal in the capital.

From early morning, passengers heading to the southern districts started gathering at the terminal to celebrate Eid with their families, relatives and dear and near ones.

A visit to the Sadarghat Launch Terminal this afternoon showed long queues of passengers at different gates of the terminal.

In particular, the pontoons for launches bound for Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, and Chandpur were under heavy pressure.

The terminal area took on a festive atmosphere with passengers busy carrying bags and luggage, launch departure sirens, and loudspeaker announcements.

To ensure passenger safety, members of various law enforcement agencies, including the police, RAB, and Coast Guard, were seen patrolling the terminal. Additional security measures were also taken in the pontoon areas.

Passenger Mohammad Kaiyum, who was traveling to Bhola, said, “Since the holiday has started today, our whole family is returning home together. Compared to buses and trains, traveling by river is much more comfortable. That’s why we travel by launch during every vacation.”

Another passenger, Fazlul Rahman, who was traveling to Chandpur, said, “This time I am going home with my wife and children. Usually, I try to leave before Eid, but due to work pressure it was not possible this time. However, the management at the terminal seems better than before. I hope we will reach home safely without any trouble.”

BIWTA official Muhammad Mobarak Hossain said various forces, including the police, RAB, and Coast Guard, are working to ensure passenger safety.

He added that low-step pontoons have been arranged at two ghats to prevent passengers from boarding launches from the rear side.

He further said around 100 launches will operate on approximately 45 routes today. To ensure smooth travel for passengers, a free trolley service has been introduced. In addition, wheelchairs have been arranged for sick and elderly passengers, he said.
