DHAKA, July 12, 2026 (BSS) – Traffic policemen in the capital today made extra struggle to regulate traffic movements and ensure pedestrian safety in water-clogged streets of the capital as downpour overnight and particularly heavy showers in first half of the day inundated thoroughfares throughout the city.

“Ignoring the adverse conditions, traffic policemen are relentlessly performing their duties to keep traffic movement normal,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) spokeswoman Arifa Akhtar Prity said.

Prity, an assistant police commissioner, said the traffic policemen made extra struggles to reduce people’s sufferings in water clogged streets amid heavy rains.

“They had to put extra efforts for safe movement of pedestrians alongside controlling traffic congestion caused by the downpour,” she said.

DMP officials said some 4,500 policemen currently serve in their eight traffic divisions operating rotationally in 8-hour shifts but personnel shortages require them work extra time to regulate traffic or handle congestions in peak hours or extra ordinary situations,

The met office recorded 82 mm rainfall in just 6 hours between 6:00 AM and 12:00 midday today while they reported 97 mm rainfall in previous 24 hours ending at 6 AM.

The Bangladesh capital witnessed the record high downpour in mid September 2009 when the met office recorded 341 mm in 24 hours.
