DU, China's FIO hold meeting to strengthen ocean research

DHAKA, June 2, 2026 (BSS) - A meeting was held between the University of Dhaka (DU) and the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) under China's 
Ministry of Natural Resources to strengthen ocean research in Bangladesh.

The meeting was held today at the Vice-Chancellor's conference room of the University of Dhaka with DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul 
Islam in the chair.

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Professor Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir, 
Director of the International Center for Ocean Governance (ICOG) Dr. K.M. Azam Chowdhury, Deputy Director General of the Department of International 
Cooperation of China's Ministry of Natural Resources Antao Wang, Senior Scientist of the First Institute of Oceanography Professor Dr. Fangli Qiao, 
Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the First Institute of Oceanography Yafeng Yang, Professor Changshui Jia, Professor Dr. Shiju Wang and Professor Dr. Xin Shan were present at the meeting.

The meeting discussed the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding between China's Ministry of Natural Resources and the relevant 
ministry of Bangladesh for the implementation of the CIDCA project on an early warning and forecasting system for marine disasters in Bangladesh.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam expressed interest in working closely with China's First Institute of Oceanography to expand 
educational and research cooperation and create more learning opportunities for young people.

He also stressed the need to further strengthen the ongoing joint collaborative programmes on ocean research between the University of Dhaka 
and China's First Institute of Oceanography.
