Speaker mourns death of Prof Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq

DHAKA, July 5, 2026 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, today expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of eminent academic, writer, researcher and Bangla Academy President Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq.

In a condolence message, the Speaker prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a city hospital on Sunday afternoon. He was 85.

Born on September 30, 1940, in Pakundia village of Pakundia upazila in Kishoreganj district, he had a distinguished academic career. He served for many years as a professor in the Department of Bengali at Dhaka University and was also the department's chairman.

He is survived by his daughter, Shuchita Sharmin, a professor in the Department of Development Studies at Dhaka University. His son, Faysal Arefin Dipan, owner of Jagriti Prokashoni, was killed by miscreants on October 31, 2015.
