RANGPUR, Jan 9, 2025 (BSS) - Shaheed Abu Sayeed Foundation (SASF) distributed blankets among the cold-stricken poor people in a function held on Kuthipara Government Primary School ground in Pirgachha upazila here today.

Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Haque Suman attended the programme as the chief guest and distributed blankets to 250 helpless and poor cold-stricken people of different riverine char areas of the upazila.

Shaheed Abu Sayeed Foundation President and Abu Sayeed's brother Md Ramzan Ali presided over the function moderated by local student representative Rimon Islam.

Pirgachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nur Alam Siddiqui, local Chhawla union parishad Chairman Nazir Hossain, Kuthipara Government Primary School Headmaster Md Sadequl Islam, Abu Sayeed’s fellow student coordinators Shamsur Rahman Suman and Dr Ekramul Islam were present.

Talking to BSS, Abu Hossain, General Secretary of SASF and brother of Abu Sayeed, said the blanket distribution programme will continue in the future to mitigate the sufferings of the poor and helpless people in different areas.

Earlier on January 4, the organisation distributed 500 blankets among the cold-stricken people in a function held at the Haribhasha Girls’ High School ground in Sadar upazila of Panchagarh district.

On January 2, the foundation distributed 1,000 blankets among 1,000 cold-hit needy people in a function held at Jafarpara High School ground in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur.

“Previously on December 8, on the inaugural day of SASF, we distributed Taka two lakh and 10 thousand to 210 orphans and extremely poor and needy people of the area with Taka 1,000 each,” Abu Hossain added.

The SASF, named after Abu Sayeed, was established on December 8 as a non-profit organization at Babanpur village in Pirganj upazila for continuing humanitarian services and social development activities of Abu Sayeed.

Abu Sayeed, a meritorious student of Begum Rokeya University and one of the student coordinators, embraced martyrdom in police firing during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur city on July 16 last year.

Abu Sayeed’s martyrdom quickly transformed the nationwide student-public movement against discrimination into a popular uprising, forcing the then fascist ruler Sheikh Hasina to flee the country.
