Former adviser Azizul Haque passes away

DHAKA, Jan 15, 2025 (BSS) - Former adviser to the interim government of 2007 and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) M Azizul Haque died of a massive heart attack at his Uttara residence here early today. He was 84.
 
He left behind his wife, three sons and a host of relatives, well-wishers and admirers to mourn his death.

The namaj-e janaza of Azizul was held at the SI Shiru Mia auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines after Johr prayers where senior police officers, retired police officers and his relatives and well-wishers joined.

Three sons of the deceased-Asif Aziz, Head of cash management of the Standard Chartered Bank, Hasib Aziz, Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police and Dr Tawfiq Aziz, a renowned physician of medicine and gastroenterology-were also present at the janaza.
 
After the janaza, Additional Inspector General (CID) Md Motiur Rahman Sheikh and Police Super, Dhaka Md Anisuzzaman, on behalf of Bangladesh Police, placed wreathes at the coffin of the deceased.
 
He was buried at a graveyard in the city's Uttara area after Asr prayers.
 
Azizul Haque, hailed from a respectable Muslim family of Jhiltuly village under Faridpur Sadar, joined the then Pakistan police service as an assistant superintendent of police in 1965.
 
Haque was promoted as the IGP on April 22 in 1996 and performed his duties till November 16 in 1997. He went on the retirement on December 11 in 1998. He was later appointed as an adviser for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry to the interim government of 2007.
 
He graduated from Dhaka University in Economics in 1960 and obtained his master's degree in the same subject in 1961. He also obtained his postgraduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Canberra, Australia.
