Zia established multi-party democracy: Dr Anwarullah

DHAKA, Jan 17, 2025 (BSS)- Former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury today said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had established multi-party democracy in the country.

"Zia had played an important role in need of the nation through establishing democracy in 1975," he said while speaking at a discussion marking 89th birth anniversary of former president Ziaur Rahman organized by Shaheed Zia Gabeshona Parishad at Jatiya Press Club here today.
 
Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury said the than Awami League (AL) government had destroyed democracy by establishing the Baksal. 

General Zia was a unique person as he worked to establish people oriented development and started village government system. 

The ousted AL government tortured BNP leaders and activists for 17 years, he said adding that they robbed the rights of the people. 

Prof. Anwarullah hoped that BNP will form a government through next national election and the people will get back their rights. 

He unveiled the cover of a book titled 'Zia Somogro' at the function.

Prayer for BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's recovery was also offered in the event. 

President of Shaheed Zia Gabeshona Parishad Anisur Rahman Anis presided over the discussion and its joint secretary Mukit Khan Juel conducted it.

BNP's leader Belal Ahmed, vice-president of organization Ruhul Amin, editor of Zia Somogro Golam Quader, former leader of Chhatra Dal Talukder Rumi, UK unit Mohila Dal member secretary Angona Alam, among others, spoke on the occasion.
