Ex-DMP official Shahidullah sent to jail in Shamim killing case

DHAKA, Feb 13, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sent former joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shahidullah to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.
 
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah passed the order as police produced Shahidullah before the court after the end of his five-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of the probe.
 
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazul Islam on February 9 placed the former joint commissioner on a five-day remand. Md Shahidullah was picked up from the city's Ramna area on February 9 and was taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of Police. 
 
According to the case documents, the BNP called a rally in the capital's Naya Paltan area on October 28, 2023. To counter the BNP rally, the then-ruling Awami League (AL) convened a counter-rally on the same day in the capital. The AL men with the support of law enforcement agencies attacked a BNP rally which left Shamim Mollah killed and injured many of its leaders and activists.
 
The case was filed against 704 people including AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader on September 24, 2024.
