ICT shows Atiqul, 5 others arrested in crimes against humanity case

DHAKA, Feb 17, 2025 (BSS) - The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today showed former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam and five others arrested in a crimes against humanity case filed over atrocities committed during the July-August mass uprising.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder passed the order, allowing the prosecution's plea. The court then sent the former lawmaker back to jail.

The five other accused are Awami League (AL) Uttara East unit education affairs secretary Md Shahinur Miah, its Uttara West unit president Monowarul Islam Chowdhury Robin, AL Gazipur city unit organizing secretary Abdullah Al Mamun, Uttara sector 6 AL president Md Bashir Uddin, and Jubo League leader Delwar Hossain Rubel.

Confirming the matter to BSS, prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud said the tribunal on February 11 had ordered the authorities concerned to produce the six accused before the court today. In line with that order, the jail authorities today produced them before the tribunal and subsequently were shown arrested in the case, he added.

"The tribunal also set March 9 for submitting probe report in the case," the prosecutor said.

Prosecutors BM Sultan Mahmud, Gazi MH Tamim took part in the hearing of the case, while their colleagues from the prosecution Gazi Mizanul Islam, Abdus Sobhan Tarafder, Moinul Karim and Saimum Reza were present.
