DHAKA, Mar 09, 2025 (BSS)- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has restored the members of Syrian Arab Republic after more than a decade.

The decision of resumption of the Syrian membership was approved at the 20th Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the OIC Member States.

The CFM meeting was held at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah on Friday, according to a press release received here today.

Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha welcomed the resumption of Syrian membership terming it as historic.

“It would support the Syrian people at this critical stage of their history,” he said.

Taha said Syrian membership in the OIC would help the country to accomplish the political transition in a peaceful and secure manner that ensures the restoration of the institutions, territorial integrity and status among states.

Taha also expressed his readiness to fully cooperate with the Syria in serving the goals and principles of the OIC and strengthening joint Islamic action.

The move of resumption of the membership comes 13 years after Syria had its membership suspended in 2012, in response to the late Assad regime’s brutal crackdown on protesters, killing and torture on civilians.

Now, three months after the collapse of that Asad regime and the former rebels’ assumption to power, the restoration of the country’s OIC membership marks the international community’s growing recognition to the new Syrian authorities.

The CFM meeting discussed the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and called for Israel’s complete withdrawal from Palestine land.
