Ex-MP Maleque sent to jail after remand

DHAKA, Mar 11, 2025 (BSS) – A court here today sent former lawmaker of Dhaka-20 M A Maleque to jail after four-day remand in a case filed against him for his alleged involvement in killing of protester Riazul Islam in Ashulia during the anti-discrimination student movement.   

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag passed the order, granting the plea of the investigating officer to keep him in jail while producing him before the court after the remand, Court Inspector Akhter Hossain told BSS.

Earlier, MA Maleque was arrested from the capital’s Mirpur on March 5. The following day, Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag granted him a four-day remand in the case.

According to the case statement, Riazul Islam, 38, took part in a peaceful protest on the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway under Ashulia police station at 11 am on August 5 last year.

Police and Awami League leaders and activists opened fire and he received bullet wounds. Later, he was rushed to Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

A murder case was filed with Ashulia police station on November 24 in this incident.
