5 snatchers arrested in city

DHAKA, March 15, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested five professional snatchers in the capital's Tejgaon, Mirpur, and Uttara House Building areas while attempting to mug people.

The arrestees have been identified as Md. Sajjat Hossain alias Sagar, 42, Md. Wasim Akram, 35, Md. Suman, 30, Md. Sultan Mahmud Khan, 45, and Mohammad Shanto, 29, according to a media release issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today.

The police recovered Tk 1,00,200 in cash, three packs of heroin, and a money bag from their possession.

According to the DMP Traffic Division, the snatchers mugged a passenger at the north signal of Satrasta intersection in Tejgaon at 11:40 am on Friday and fled the scene. Traffic Sergeant Md. Sohrab Hossain, who was on duty, immediately pursued the suspects and recovered the stolen cash with the help of the public.

On the same day, at 11:30 am, Traffic Sergeant Md. Robin Rana of the Mirpur Zone heard a pedestrian scream as snatcher Sultan Mahmud attempted to rob him in front of Setara Tower. Rana chased and arrested the suspect with public assistance.

Later, at 12:10 pm, Traffic Sergeant Shahadat Hossain Shanto, along with the help of the public, arrested another snatcher, Mohammad Shanto, in the Uttara House Building area.

The arrested individuals have been handed over to the concerned police stations, and legal action is being taken against them, said the media release.
