DU expels 128 students over attacks on student during uprising

DHAKA, Mar 17, 2025 (BSS)- Dhaka University authorities have temporarily expelled 128 students over their involvement in the attacks carried out on students from July 15 to August 05 last year at Dhaka University campus during the student-led mass uprising.

“The students against whom the fact finding body found primary evidence of their direct involvement in the attacks have been expelled temporarily,” DU Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed told BSS.

The decisions was made at a DU Syndicate meeting today, based on the report of the fact-finding committee regarding the attacks during the July mass uprising.

Among the 128 students, at least 122 students were directly involved with the banned student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Awami League.   
 
DU VC Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan told media that the university has temporarily expelled 128 students accused of attacking students in the Dhaka University area during the anti-discrimination student movement.

A probe committee, headed by Syndicate member Professor Dr. Tajmeri S A Islam has been formed to conduct more in-depth investigation regarding the expelled individuals, said DU proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed.

It also includes the proctor, Sir A. F. Rahman Hall Provost Kazi Mahfuzul Haque Supon, Law Faculty Dean Professor Dr. Mohammad Ikramul Haque, and several others as members.

Final decision in this regard will be made based on the probe body report, said the university proctor.

The fact-finding committee formed on October 8 last year to probe the violence submitted report to Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan on Thursday.
