Election only way to restore democracy: Khasru

CHATTOGRAM, March 22, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that holding a free, fair and credible national election is the only way to restore democratic order in the country and return back the people’s ownership over the state.

Speaking as the chief guest at the exchange of views with media and Ifter Mahfil here, he alleged that a quarter is trying to hinder the democratic transition through obstructing or delaying the polls.  

“Any alternative thinking instead of holding the election towards establishing a democratic new Bangladesh is a clear stance against the spirit of July uprising and huge sacrifices of the people’s struggle against the fascist rule ,” he added.

BNP city unit arranged the function held at Ladies Club in the city with Unit Convener Alhaj Ershad Ullah in the chair.

Moderated by unit Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman, City Mayor and former BNP City Unit President Dr. Shahadat Hossen, BNP leaders Abul Hashem Bakkar and Alhaj Shamsul Alam, among others, were present at the function.   

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that people of the country were deprived from their legitimate rights including voting rights during the ousted fascist regime of Sheikh Hasina in one way while a quarter has been trying through another way to snatch the people’s fundamental rights like fascist regime.  

Former Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud said it is high time to declare clear and definite roadmap for national election to fulfill the aspirations of the countrymen, restore a constitutional rule and a government with people’s mandate.

He said everybody particularly all important segments of the society and political parties must imbue with the changed mindset of the people stem from the July uprising, a prerequisite for establishing a New Bangladesh.

Refuting the allegation that BNP is trying to rehabilate Awami League in the country politically, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that those, who have brought such “false and baseless propaganda” is actually hatching a plot to curb the popularity of BNP.

“Virtually they have no ideology and ground among the people”   he said.

In this connection, he said BNP believes in a tolerant and tranquil society but it does not meant that ousted fascist forces will spare from trail and punishments for resorting untold repression, unbridled corruption, killing, forced disappearance in last 15 years.

He said, “Some vested quarters are carrying out propaganda war against BNP to malign it’s image and belittle the party’s outstanding contributions and sacrifices for democracy in last 15 years”.

Replying a query, Amir Khasru said no other party but BNP has set an example by expelling and taking organizational punishments even without investigation against at least 2,000 workers and leaders across the country after August 5 whenever allegations of unlawful or anti-organizational activities were raised against them.
