Three to walk gallows for gang raping girl in Keraniganj

DHAKA, March 25, 2025 (BSS) - A special court here today convicted and sentenced three to death in a case lodged over rape and subsequently murder of a girl in Keraniganj in 2022.

Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman pronounced the judgment this morning.

The three convicts are Md Sajib, Md Rakib and Shaon. The court also sentenced them to seven-year imprisonment for the charge of hiding the body. It also acquitted Ali Akbar and Md Riaj from the charges.

Of the trio convicts, Rakib and Shaon were present during the pronouncement of the judgment and were sent back to jail with conviction warrant. 

The court issued an arrest warrant against Md Sajib as he is yet to be arrested and was tried in absentia.

Police, on June 11, 2022, found the body of the victim in the pond of West Bamonsur Mosque under Keraniganj Model Police Station. They later traced a friend of the victim, who identified the body. 

After primary investigation, police arrested Shaon, who later gave statement under section 164. He, in his confessional statement, said he along with Sajib, Rakib and Ali Akbar raped the girl and strangled her to death. Later, they threw the body in the pond. 

Police later arrested Rakib and Sajib, who also gave confessional statements at the court.

On September 30, 2023, police filed charge sheet against five. The court today came up with the judgment after examining 19 witnesses on different hearing dates.
