RANGPUR, March 25, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested former Rangpur Metropolitan Chhatra League president Shafiur Rahman Swadhin in an attempted murder case related to the anti-discrimination student movement during the July Uprising.

Ataur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali police station confirmed the arrest to BSS this afternoon.

Earlier, Shafiur Rahman Swadhin was arrested from Rangpur Government Girls' High School premises in the city on Monday night.

He previously served as the president of Rangpur Metropolitan Chhatra League, the organizing secretary of the district Chhatra League, and the convener of Rangpur Government College Chhatra League.

Shafiur Rahman Swadhin resigned from the post of Metropolitan Chhatra League president two years ago while involved in student politics and joined the public service as an assistant station master.

He has been in hiding since the fall of the fascist Sheikh Hasina regime in the mass uprising of students and the public.

Police sources said that during the anti-discrimination student movement, a clash took place in the town hall area of the city on July 19.

Abu Sayeed, a resident of Ganeshpur in the city, was injured along with many others in the attack.

In this incident, Abu Sayeed filed an attempt-to-murder case on November 7 last year, naming 65 people, including Shafiur Rahman Swadhin.

Some 300 more unidentified people have been named as accused in that case.

"Swadhin had been absconding since the fall of the previous regime. He was arrested on Monday night," the OC said, adding that Swadhin was sent to jail through a court today.
