DHAKA, Aug 24, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today granted bail to Jatiyabadi Krishok Dal general secretary Shahidul Islam Babul in a case lodged with the city's Paltan Model Police Station for obstructing law enforcers from conducting their duties and holding illegal gathering.

Acting judge Ibrahim Miah of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court passed the order on condition of filing appeal in the case.

Earlier on August 18, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman sent Babul to jail as he surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail.

"This court does not have the jurisdiction to allow bail to convict, who has been sentenced to jail term of more than two years. So the court sent him to jail after declining his bail plea. We would file a bail plea again tomorrow with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court," defence counsel Sadekul Islam Bhuiyan said on that day.

After that the accused filed separate pleas, one for bail and another for acquittal of the charges in the case, on August 19.

Police in 2017 filed the case for allegedly obstructing traffic on a VIP Road and trying to vandalize vehicles. Charge-sheet in the case was filed in 2019.

The court on November 23, 2023, pronounced judgment in the case, sentencing Shahidul Islam Babul to two and a half years of jail under one charge and another one year jail under another.
