DHAKA, Aug 31, 2025 (BSS) – Experts at a discussion have urged all concerned to take measures to ensure human rights in all workplaces, especially in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, in accordance with international standards.

Labour Reform Commission Chief and Executive Director of the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmmed, who joined the programme via teleconference, said that the mere existence of laws is not enough to prevent human rights violations in the workplace; effective implementation and monitoring are also essential.

He was speaking at the concluding session of the two-day 'Capacity Development Training Workshop for Journalists on Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in the Ready-Made Garment Sector', held at a city hotel.

In this context, Sultan Ahmmed noted that the media can play a strong role as a watchdog, and both national and international media should remain active in holding stakeholders accountable for proper HR (Human Rights) compliance.

Organized by BILS with support from Mondial FNV, the workshop was attended by 31 journalists from various newspapers and news agencies.

Mondial FNV consultant Md Shahinur Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Labour Rights Journalists Forum (BLRJF) Kazi Abdul Hannan, researcher and Associate Professor at Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology Aurangzeb Akand, BILS Director Nazma Yasmin, Deputy Director Md Yusuf Al-Mamun, and Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) Office Secretary Zakir Hossain, among others, also spoke at the event.

The discussants emphasized that journalists need to stay updated on policies and laws related to the protection of human and labour rights.

To that end, they said trade unions and their affiliated organizations can support the media through training, workshops, policy dialogues, workplace visits, and awareness campaigns.
