DHAKA, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) has declared valid the nomination of Monirul Haque Chowdhury, BNP-nominated candidate for the Cumilla-6 constituency.

The commission declared the verdict today by dismissing an appeal filed challenging his nomination.

The hearing on the appeal was held before the full commission at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital Agargaon with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin in the chair.

Independent candidate Haji Aminur Rashid Yasin had filed the appeal challenging the validity of Monirul Haque Chowdhury's nomination.

During the hearing, the appellant's counsel raised three allegations that Monirul Haque Chowdhury had failed to disclose in his affidavit information regarding loan default as chairman of Purbachal Fuels Limited; that he had concealed information about a property named "Monir Tower"; and that he had not provided information regarding dependents.

In response, Monirul Haque Chowdhury's counsel, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, submitted relevant documents to the Commission and stated that, according to bank records, Monirul Haque Chowdhury is not the chairman of Purbachal Fuels Limited-his wife, Begum Azizunnesa, holds that position.

He further said that Monir Tower had earlier been transferred in the names of Chowdhury's children, and that providing information on dependents is not mandatory but optional.

After hearing arguments from both sides and reviewing the submitted documents, the commission rejected the allegations and declared Monirul Haque Chowdhury's candidacy valid.

Following the hearing, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol told journalists, "After reviewing all documents and conducting a lengthy hearing, the Election Commission has declared Monirul Haque Chowdhury's nomination valid."

Expressing satisfaction after the verdict, Monirul Haque Chowdhury told reporters, "I express my gratitude to Almighty Allah. The Election Commission has dismissed all the baseless and fabricated allegations brought against me and upheld my nomination. I thank the Commission for this."
