DHAKA, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Forest Department today signed an agreement with IUCN Bangladesh to update the National Red List of Bangladesh's fauna under a government-funded project.

The agreement was signed by Project Director Md Sanaullah Patowary and IUCN Bangladesh Country Representative Bipasha Sharmine Hossain, an official handout said.

Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury presided over the programme.

The National Red List is a key scientific and policy document that assesses the conservation status of wildlife and plant species in Bangladesh using internationally recognised IUCN Red List categories and criteria.

According to the handout, the updated Red List will support evidence-based conservation planning, policy formulation, protected area management and species-specific action plans, while also contributing to the achievement of SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

The initiative will further strengthen Bangladesh's commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, CITES and other international environmental agreements.
