
DHAKA, Feb 21, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai today observed the Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day with due solemnity, paying tribute to the Language Movement martyrs through flag hoisting, wreath laying, discussions and cultural performances.
The programme began with Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner Farhana Ahmed Chowdhury hoisting the national flag at half-mast at the chancery premises, according to a message received here.
Floral wreaths were placed at a temporary Shaheed Minar to the tune of the immortal song "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari."
A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the language martyrs, followed by special prayers and munajat seeking eternal peace for their departed souls.
Messages from the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out on the occasion.
Addressing a discussion meeting, the Deputy High Commissioner highlighted the significance of the historic Language Movement in shaping Bangladesh's heritage, culture and national consciousness.
She said the Language Movement stands as a defining chapter in the nation's history, reflecting the people's determination to safeguard their identity, culture, uniqueness and dignity, often through supreme sacrifice.
Speakers at the event recalled the history of Bangladesh's Language Movement and its enduring legacy.
They also referred to UNESCO's 1999 declaration of Bangladesh's Language Martyrs' Day as International Mother Language Day in recognition of the global importance of linguistic and cultural diversity.
The observance concluded with a cultural programme at the Deputy High Commission premises, featuring patriotic songs and poetry recitations in Bangla and other languages.
Invited guests, officials and staff of the Deputy High Commission and their family members attended the programme.
