PM initiates promised programs within a month of taking oath: Mir Helal

CHATTOGRAM, March 14, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Land and Hill Tracts Affairs, Barrister Mir Mohammed Helal Uddin, said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already started implementing promised activities less than a month after the election and taking oath.

He cited the family card distribution program in 13-14 pilot areas, which is currently underway and mentioned that the canal digging program will officially begin on March 16.

The State Minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a program where financial assistance of Tk 10,000 each was distributed to 47 poor and needy people from the Hathazari Upazila Government Zakat Fund at 11:30 am today.

The program, held at the Upazila Parishad auditorium, was presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Abdullah Al Mumin.

Highlighting the significance of Zakat, Mir Helal said it is a mandatory duty for Muslims with a certain amount of wealth.

"Those receiving Zakat deserve it. It is not a favor, but our responsibility. In fact, they are doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to fulfill this duty," he added.

The event was attended by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shahed Arman, Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari Model Police Station Md. Zahidur Rahman, Central BNP member Sathi Uday Kusum Barua, Hathazari Municipality BNP convener Md. Zaker Hossain, Upazila BNP member secretary Gias Uddin, Municipality BNP member secretary Ahidul Islam, various Upazila officials, union chairmen, and panel chairmen.

Earlier, Mir Helal inaugurated a cleanliness drive organized by the Upazila administration at Hathazari College Gate. 

Later, around 12:30 pm, he inaugurated the VGF rice distribution program for the extremely poor under the government's humanitarian assistance initiative at Fatehpur Union Parishad in Hathazari.
